Language History

Farsi, commonly called (Modern) Persian, belongs to the Iranian branch of Indo-European languages. Although the origin of this language remains unclear, it is believed to be closely related to Middle and Old Persian (some insist it derives from a Pahlavi dialect spoken in northeast Iran.) Old and Middle Persian emerged in southwest Iran – the center of the Persian Empire known as Parsa or Fars.

Classical Persian is characterised by the literature and poetry of famed poets including Rudaki and Khayyam. It was during this period (ninth to thirteenth centuries) when Persian was officially the lingua franca of eastern Islamic nations. When Tehran was chosen as the capital of Persia in 1787, the dialect of Tehran became more prominent, eventually forming the foundation of Contemporary Standard Persian – Farsi, or Modern Persian.
